The Deal
In March 2024, Microsoft hired Inflection AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman (DeepMind co-founder) along with most of the Inflection engineering team. Microsoft paid approximately $650M in licensing fees and compensation to facilitate the move. Inflection continued as a smaller company focused on enterprise AI.
Strategic Rationale
Microsoft wanted a proven AI leader to run their consumer AI division (now Microsoft AI). Suleyman brought deep experience building AI organizations (co-founding DeepMind, scaling it at Google). His team included world-class researchers who would accelerate Microsoft internal model development beyond dependence on OpenAI.
Impact
The deal signaled Microsoft was hedging its OpenAI dependency by building internal AI capabilities. Suleyman launched Microsoft Copilot improvements and began developing Microsoft own foundation models. The deal also crystallized the acqui-hire model that became standard for AI talent acquisition.
What Happened After
Suleyman became EVP of Microsoft AI, overseeing Copilot and consumer AI products. He pushed rapid product development and integration of AI across Windows and Bing. Inflection AI pivoted to enterprise API products with a smaller team. The deal validated that top AI talent commands acquisition-level compensation even without acquiring the actual company.
