The Prompt

Create a SWOT analysis for [COMPANY/PRODUCT/DECISION].

Context: [RELEVANT BACKGROUND]
Time horizon: [6 months / 1 year / 3 years]

For each quadrant, provide 4-6 items that are:
- Specific (not generic truisms)
- Evidence-based (cite the indicator)
- Actionable (leads to a strategic move)

**STRENGTHS** (Internal, Positive)
What advantages do we have that competitors don't? What do we do uniquely well?

**WEAKNESSES** (Internal, Negative)
What are we bad at? What do competitors do better? What constraints limit us?

**OPPORTUNITIES** (External, Positive)
What market trends favor us? What gaps exist? What could we exploit?

**THREATS** (External, Negative)
What could disrupt us? What are competitors doing? What's changing against us?

Then provide:
**STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS:**
- SO strategies (use Strengths to capture Opportunities)
- WO strategies (address Weaknesses to capture Opportunities)
- ST strategies (use Strengths to mitigate Threats)
- WT strategies (address Weaknesses to avoid Threats)

Prioritize: which 2-3 strategic moves should we act on first?

How To Use It

Provide company context and specify the time horizon — a 6-month SWOT differs significantly from a 3-year one. The strategic implications section is what transforms this from an academic exercise into a decision tool.

Why It Works

Most SWOTs are useless because they’re generic (“strong brand” as a strength). This prompt demands specificity and evidence, then forces the crucial step most people skip: translating observations into strategic actions using the SO/WO/ST/WT framework.

Variations

Personal career SWOT:

Create a career SWOT for me based on: [skills, experience, goals]. Focus on the next 12 months and suggest 3 career moves based on the analysis.

Product SWOT:

SWOT this product feature set against [COMPETITOR]. Weight items by impact on customer decision-making, not internal importance.

Decision SWOT:

I'm deciding whether to [DECISION]. Create a SWOT where the "company" is "me after making this decision" and threats/opportunities are the consequences.
