Most Western AI coverage ignores ByteDance entirely, which is a mistake: they have more AI engineering talent, more compute, and more consumer AI deployment experience than most dedicated AI labs. Zhang stepping back from daily operations hasn't diminished ByteDance's ambition — it may have freed the company to move faster.
