OUR READ

Russell is the rare AI safety voice who can't be dismissed as a doomer outsider — he literally wrote the textbook that trained the people building these systems. His argument that we should build AI systems that are uncertain about human preferences (rather than optimizing fixed objectives) is one of the most intellectually rigorous safety frameworks available. The frustration is that his ideas get respectful nods at conferences but haven't fundamentally changed how frontier labs approach alignment in practice. He deserves more influence than he currently has.
